Roof Mapping

Problem

When working at Scapa, my supervisor informed me that the plant did not own a map of the building's roof. There was going to be many renovations to the roof in the coming years, and it would be beneficial to have a map.

Considerations

  • Find a way to map the roof efficiently and safely

  • Factor in weather and other work projects to provide an accurate timetable

  • Decide on a legend and format for the map

Solution

The first step in mapping the roof was planning. I went over the safety protocols then went up to the roof to survey and break it into sections that I would map one at a time. I then made a legend with all the air conditioners and other units on the roof for clarity. Having an idea of the conditions, I decided to purchase a laser measurement tool, pictured to the left. I then proceeded to draw one section per day in a notebook and label the dimensions. That would be done in the morning each day, then in the afternoon I would input my drawing into AutoCAD.

Result

After the whole roof was mapped in AutoCAD, I editted the drawing to format it in the same way as other maps at Scapa. I added in the legend and had it looked over by my superiors. Later on in the Summer, the map was used to visualize the 10-year renovation plan of the roof. The map is pictured to the left.
